Adventure on the Sound is a three-day, two-night program aboard the Schooner SoundWaters that offers groups of 15 – 20 students in 9th -12th grade a unique opportunity for personal growth. During the program students will learn to work as a team, discover the leader within themselves, understand a new meaning of community and experience adventure within a safe environment,aboard the schooner SoundWaters and on Sheffield Island, home of the historic Sheffield Island Lighthouse (listed on the National Register of Historic Places) and the Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge.SoundWaters Adventure on the Sound program provides students with critical leadership and team building skills, an opportunity to experience their local environment and multiple ways to learn in a non-competitive setting. Through Adventure on the Sound, students grow personally, improve communication skills, learn to think more deeply about their natural environment and achieve a higher level of solidarity. We teach leadership through experience while fostering an educational and fun environment.

 

Teambuilding and Leadership

Sailing the 80′ Schooner SoundWatersdemands that participants act as a
team and accept responsibility.

  • Work together as to navigate the schooner to her overnight destination.
  • Strike and set the four sails onSoundWaters.
  • Create shelter, start a fire, and prepare meals at the island campsite.

Experiencing Adventure

Under the leadership of the seasonedSoundWaters captain and crew, students will experience new challenges in a safe environment.

  • Feel the thrill of steering a 32-ton vessel powered only by the wind!
  • Navigate to an uninhabited island and home again!
  • Learn survival skills and sleep under the stars!
