Pre-school classrooms of 3 and 4 year-olds, 4-week program
(6 in-school hrs + 1.5 field trip hours, Total of 7.5 contact-hours)
The mission of the SoundKids Program is to expose 3- and 4- year old students to experiences and activities that improve understanding and aid development of scientific inquiry skills necessary as children encounter their world in and out of school. SoundWaters goal is to give pre-school students the tools that will improve their performance in elementary school and beyond.
On classroom days, thematic, science lessons begin with a story and group discussion introducing the days topic and activities, and end with a short summation to remind the pre-schoolers how the morning’s activities link together with a theme. The middle ½-hour portion of the 50-minute session is comprised of three teacher-guided, science activities (SoundWaters educators and pre-school teachers), followed by teacher and student-participatory clean-up time.
Field trips will begin with a SoundWaters Educator meeting the preschool class at the footbridge to Cove Island, leading them on a 45-minute, explorative outdoor habitat walk, followed by a 45-minute indoor, hands-on animal program.
CT Core Science Framework Fit:
The SoundKids Program successfully targets Connecticut’s pre-K through kindergarten Content Standards and Expected Performances. Specifically, SoundKids curriculum is designed to encourage scientific inquiry, literacy and numeracy at an appropriate developmental level. Over the course of a multiple-week SoundKids Program, students are called-upon to develop aspects of the following Expected Performances for the state’s Pre-K to Grade 2 Cluster:
A INQ.1 Make observations and ask questions about objects, organisms and the environment.
A INQ.3 Make predictions based on observed patterns.
A INQ.4 [Read, write], listen and speak about observations of the natural world.
A INQ.5 Seek information in [books, magazines and] pictures.
A INQ.6 Present information in [words and] drawings.
A INQ.8 Use non-standard measures to estimate and compare the size of objects.
A INQ.9 Count, order and sort objects by their properties.
