The Junior Crew from Rogers brought in a great haul today while trawling: 8 spider crabs, several large boring sponges, two fluke and a windowpane flounder.

Second Grade Class Pays it Forward during visit for Hands-On Science Field Study

At Rye Country Day School studying Long Island Sound is the highlight of the second grade curriculum. During their studies the students decided they wanted to do something to help Long Island Sound and the idea of making a calendar filled with student artwork and public service announcements was born. The entire second grade visited SoundWaters for a day of exploring and hands-on learning. While they were here students presented a check to SoundWaters from the proceeds of their calendar sale so that other students could have the same great experiences they did.

Students were so excited to pay it forward they requested the money go towards food for our animals, salt to keep the animals in our aquarium healthy, and microscopes so other students could learn.

A living fossil?

Last summer our Opti campers found horseshoe crabs while sailing out in Holly Pond! They learned about these incredible animals that have been on the planet over 300 million years! Together all of the campers got to hold the horseshoe crab and tag him as part of a research program.

We picked up the first horseshoe crab of the season today while trawling with the Boys and Girls Club of Greenwich.
