CAPTAIN
The Schooner SoundWaters operates primarily in the western section of Long Island Sound and serves both children and adults from the communities of NY and CT. Under the Captain’s direction, 5-7 deckhand/educators live and teach aboard the 80-foot, three-masted schooner. SoundWaters typical operating season runs from March 15 through November 15. The Captain position is 4 - 5 days a week and year-round. This position would be working in partnership with SoundWaters Co-Captains. This is an exciting and important time to join SoundWaters as the ship will be undergoing a refit of her accommodations space in the winter of 2007-08.
SUMMARY:
SoundWaters seeks an energetic, capable captain to command the schooner SoundWaters on the waters of Long Island Sound for day and overnight programs. The successful candidate will have demonstrated leadership ability, proven competence and safety record, and a commitment to education under sail. Programs include school group-based three-hour Floating Classroom sails, five-day summer camp programs, three-day leadership-focused Adventure on the Sound programs, dockside “open-ship” programs, public sails and private charters.
PRIMARY PURPOSE AND FUNCTION:
- Operate, manage and maintain SoundWaters in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations
- Work in partnership with SoundWaters Co-Captain
- Train and manage crew, ensure passenger safety, and provide for best interests of the organization.
- Report to Executive Director.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversee operation of SoundWaters in strict compliance with company policies, and federal and state regulations. Ensure safe operation of vessel at all times.
- Plan and implement maintenance for the schooner and her boats. Employ all organizational resources including crew and volunteers. Plan and adhere to an annual operations and maintenance budget. Plan for annual and capital maintenance items.
- Work closely with the Co-Captain and Executive Director to plan use of vessel to maximize mission-related programs and revenue.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Strong seamanship and boat handling skills. Previous command time highly preferable.
- Ability to manage crew and relate well to passengers of all ages and backgrounds. A strong customer service and organizational development sensibility is essential.
- Strong personnel management and leadership skills, high productivity, ability to thrive in a fast-paced, hard-working environment.
- Confidence and flexibility for encouraging students to run the ship during long-term programs. Ability to monitor safety while conducting program.
- Minimum 50-ton Inland Aux-Sail license. Licenses of greater scope preferred.
