HEAD EDUCATOR
SoundWaters, founded in 1989, is a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection of Long Island Sound and its watershed through education. Annually SoundWaters offers shipboard and land-based programs to 35,000 children and adults. SoundWaters works in partnership with individuals, schools, communities, businesses, civic organizations, and other environmental and educational organizations to develop experiences that foster a sense of responsibility and encourage actions that ensure the sustainable future of the Long Island Sound ecosystem.
The “Floating Classroom” is a multi-disciplinary and adaptable environmental program designed for local schools, summer campers and community organizations. All crew live and teach aboard an 80 foot three-masted schooner that serves both children and adults in Western Long Island Sound.
SoundWaters sails from April 1 through November 15 and the crew reports around the middle of March. The crew is expected to live an environmentally sound lifestyle aboard the schooner as she sails from port to port in Long Island Sound, and to act as environmental ambassadors for the SoundWaters organization.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
Participating in the interdisciplinary on-board education programs, including environmental and nautical science
Teaching small group hands-on activities at the schooner's learning stations.
Developing new learning stations when necessary to meet group needs.
Preparing and maintaining education equipment.
Preparing the schooner for program each morning and sharing in daily chores.
Assisting with the sailing of the schooner.
In addition to the above listed Deckhand responsibilities, the Head Educator is responsible for:
Contact teachers prior to their program
Organize crew teaching schedule
Oversee the maintenance of all education material
Develop and teach curriculum for “Floating Classroom” and Summer Camp Programs
QUALIFICATIONS:
Pursuit of degree and / or career in science (bio, geology, chem, etc.), history, or other field with some experience teaching young people preferred.
Enjoy working with people, especially children.
Strong verbal communication skills and lots of ENTHUSIASM!
Must feel comfortable in a close knit, cooperative living and working situation.
Willingness to live aboard the schooner and participate in the shipboard community.
Musical ability, particularly singing, a big plus.
STIPEND: $250 per week plus room and board aboard the schooner SoundWaters. Room + Board
