RELIEF CAPTAIN

SoundWaters, founded in 1989, is a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection of Long Island Sound and its watershed through education. Annually SoundWaters offers shipboard and land-based programs to 35,000 children and adults. SoundWaters works in Partnership with individuals, schools, communities, businesses, civic organizations and other environmental and education organizations to develop experiences that foster a sense of responsibility and encourage actions that ensure the future of the Long Island Sound ecosystem. SoundWaters sails from April 1 to November 15.

SUMMARY: SoundWaters seeks an energetic, capable relief captain to command the schooner on day and overnight programs. The successful candidate will have demonstrated leadership ability, proven competence and safety record and a commitment to education under sail. Programs include school group-based three-hour Floating Classroom sails, five-day summer camp programs and five-day leadership-focused Journeys programs.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
Safe operation of vessel on waters of Long Island Sound
Care for vessel and crew
Involvement with on-board education programs
Participate in the interdisciplinary on-board education program
Teach relevant aspects of program curriculum
Prepare the schooner for day trips and long-term programs
Reports to Captain and Executive Director

QUALIFICATIONS:
Strong seamanship and boat handling skills
Ability to manage crew and relate well with passengers of all ages and backgrounds
Strong personnel management skills, high productivity, ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
Strong verbal communication skills
Minimum 50-ton Inland Aux-sail license. Licenses of greater scope preferred.

START DATE: Starting hours 25-35/wk with possibility for year-round employment. Flexible schedule.

SALARY: Competitive compensation commensurate with experience.
