Education:

SoundWaters is education through experience. We are the #1 choice of schools that study the Science of the Sound. Students experience our acclaimed environmental science programs at our Learning Lab & Teaching Aquarium at the Coastal Education Center; aboard our 80’, three-masted Schooner SoundWaters: The Teaching Vessel of Long Island Sound; and at schools and field sites across the Long Island Sound region.

We reach an extraordinary number of school children through breadth, depth and innovation: Annually, more than 25,000 students learn and explore through educational programs at SoundWaters. On any given day, pre-schoolers observe, touch, and discover sea stars; elementary students count, measure, and compare crab populations; middle schoolers hypothesize, experiment, and collect field data on water quality; and high schoolers research plankton, maintain aquarium tanks and gain work skills.

Awareness

SoundWaters brings Long Island Sound into people’s lives. We offer learning opportunities for people of all ages; aboard the SoundWaters, with public afternoon and sunset sails offered from June- September; at the Coastal Center in Stamford’s Cove Island Park, open free of charge Monday-Friday, and Saturdays during summer; and through our Business & Environment Speaker Series, a timely and relevant lunchtime lecture series that includes topics on climate change, green building, energy conservation and more. We also offer private charters aboard the Schooner and private rentals at the Center, all designed to engage the public in the joy and wonder of Long Island Sound.

Action

SoundWaters education programs and awareness opportunities are designed to stimulate adults and children to make changes in their own lives to help protect Long Island Sound. In spring and fall, SoundWaters Make a Difference Days integrate education activities on topics such as floatable debris, marine animals and horseshoe crab spawning and mating with coastal clean-ups to emphasize the relationship between healthy waters and a healthy environment. We recruit volunteers during our annual spring collaboration with Project Limulus at Sacred Heart University to monitor and tag horseshoe crabs that come up on the coastline to spawn and mate. We have a robust Corporate Volunteer program and area businesses call upon us to assist in their community service activities.
